Once you register a Steam license to your Square Enix account, you can never switch that account to the standalone Windows version.

Once you purchase any version of the game, you cannot go back to the free trial. You will be required to pay a monthly subscription from that point forward.
If you buy the base game on Steam, you must buy all future expansions on Steam. You cannot mix and match a Windows expansion with a Steam base game.
