Based on Simon Winchester’s non-fiction book The Surgeon of Crowthorne , the film stars as Professor James Murray. In the mid-19th century, Murray took on the Herculean task of compiling every word in the English language, including their origins and history.
Struggling with the sheer scale of the project, Murray turned to the public for help. His most prolific contributor turned out to be (played by Sean Penn ), an American surgeon who submitted over 10,000 entries while confined to the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Minor had been institutionalized after killing an innocent man during a paranoid delusion, and his work on the dictionary became a form of penance and intellectual salvation.
