Once Sora, Donald, and Goofy awaken, they realize a year has passed and they have forgotten the events of Chain of Memories . They are quickly sent on a new quest by Yen Sid to find Riku and King Mickey. Their primary antagonists are , a group of powerful, black-cloaked Nobodies who seek to create their own "Kingdom Hearts" to regain the hearts they lost.

The game opens not with the main hero Sora, but with a boy named during the final seven days of his summer vacation in a virtual Twilight Town. Roxas eventually discovers he is Sora’s "Nobody"—a hollow shell created when Sora briefly lost his heart in the first game.
