The roar of the engines drowned out the storm as the massive iron legs left the jagged crystalline ground. For a few glorious seconds, the heavy machine was weightless, soaring above the yellow, acid-etched canyons.

The machine felt less like a vehicle and more like an extension of my own nerves. Outside, the environment was a hellscape of blistering radiation and howling dust storms that would have melted the shielding of a standard hazard suit in minutes.
