The story is less about a traditional plot and more about Fern's internal journey through the American West.

Nomadland is a meditative character study following (Frances McDormand), a woman in her sixties who loses everything after the 2008 Great Recession . Following the death of her husband and the economic collapse of her company town in Empire, Nevada—which literally ceases to exist—she packs her life into a van and becomes a "houseless" modern-day nomad.
